The cattle feedlot industry is worth approximately $4.4 billion to the economy. The industry employs close to 30,000 people directly or indirectly (Australian Lot Feeders’ Association 2015), and nearly all feedlots operating are family-owned businesses.
There are around 450 accredited feedlots throughout Australia with the majority located in areas that are in close proximity to cattle and grain supplies. Feedlots are often the epicentre of a town’s business community and therefore hold a vital place in the local economy.
Queensland is the largest state in terms of cattle numbers on feed with approximately 60% followed by New South Wales with 30%, Victoria with 7% and the remainder shared between Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia.
